Credit Reports

  • Are Credit Reports More Important Than You Think?

Many people do not realize how important their credit report is until they want to get a credit card, a loan and other things, like refinancing a home. This report is often used when renting a house or apartment, or when applying at some places of employment. When the credit score is not favorable it can mean being turned down for many financial things, and when it is excellent the sky is the limit. This means better interest rates on credit cards and when taking loans from financial institutions.

In the United States, there are three credit bureaus and when credit cards are used and paid for on time, or if they are paid late or not at all it will be reflected in the persons credit file. When a loan is paid on time and no payments are late the credit score at these bureaus as a favorable satisfied debt. This is added up in points to arrive at a score that will show either the person is an excellent credit risk, good, poor or bad risk. When applying for a credit card, loan and other financial things any or all of the three major credit bureaus are checked.

In order to know what a credit report says and what the credit score is, it can be ordered from each of the three major credit bureaus once a year for free by mail. It can also be looked at on the Internet free and if someone wants to keep an eye on his or her credit rating, they can do so for a fee. Many people feel this is important to do, because of identity theft, and errors reported on the credit file. When looking at a credit report it is possible to see who has accessed the file, and if it is unknown why or who, the credit bureaus can be alerted. Each person or company that accesses a credit file is noted, this also helps people to watch that their identity is not stolen.

The credit report is the one most important thing that determines if a credit card is given, if a loan is obtained and even when opening a bank account today the persons credit will be checked. This is why it is important to keep a credit score positive and work on changing a poor, or no credit rating to a positive rating.
